The Lord of the Rings trilogy is still on sale for Prime Day

Update (July 12): Unfortunately, Tuesday’s Prime Day deal on the 4K Blu-ray box set of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is no longer available. The package is still discounted from its regular price of $89.99, but the sale isn’t as good — it’s marked down to $68.55 (24% off) rather than $39.99.

For day 2 of Prime Day, Amazon is still offering deals on the remastered Blu-ray versions of the trilogy, which were released in 2021 (and are based on the 2020 4K remaster). Unlike the 4K Blu-ray package — which includes both the theatrical and extended editions of the trilogy — the Blu-ray release split up the editions, forcing buyers to decide which version they want.

The theatrical edition of the Lord of the Rings trilogy on Blu-ray is on sale for $11.99 (typically $18.19). The extended edition is available for $28.49 (typically $40.87).

Prime Day 2023 is also offering a ton of other great DVD and Blu-ray deals, along with discounts on streaming subscriptions like Max and Paramount Plus. Lord of the Rings fans can also snatch up special edition and illustrated Lord of the Rings books.

Original story: One does not simply watch Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy of movies. One decides carefully which cut to watch, one uses the biggest screen one has, one gets snacks in, and one uses the highest-quality source one can, the better to lap up every detail of these movies that still look sweepingly gorgeous, 20 years on.

One could therefore do a lot worse than snapping up The Lord of the Rings Trilogy on 4K Blu-ray for $39.99 this Amazon Prime Day, a huge $50 reduction from its original $89.99 price tag.

If you’re equipped for 4K Blu-ray playback — and if you own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, you are — this latest edition of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy box set is a must-buy. You get far better fidelity than on any streaming platform, and a choice of the original theatrical versions or the extended cuts — all 12 hours of them — to watch, plus extras, spread over no less than nine discs.
